Storage and Computation in Sentence Processingng. We relate this evidence to recent sentence processing models that suggest that these two are conceptually distinct. We show that research using neuroimaging methods that localize language functions and methods which track neuronal activity on-line suggest that computation and storage are supported by separate neuronal substrates.

The Balance Between Storage and Computation in Phonologyical storage of the effects of these processes. This implies that the notions ‘underlying form’ and ‘lexically stored form’ should not be equated: surface forms are stored, and underlying forms are computed when they are needed for coining new words.

Storage and Computation in Spoken Word Productionred material, and adapt it to the word at hand. The chapter reviews the WEAVER++ model of word production, spells out the model’s stance on the storage/computation trade-offs, and describes relevant empirical evidence.

Computation and Storage in Discourse Interpretationrred method is a local and opportunistic strategy that makes defeasible guesses. I end by suggesting that once we have constructed a decent model of computing discourse structure, we are in a better position to evaluate what role storage can play.

Dutch Inflection: The Rules that Prove the Exceptionon-line parsing also plays a role. We argue that the balance of storage and computation cannot be predicted on the basis of economy of linguistic description. Instead, a range of cognitive and linguistic factors are crucial determinants.

What’s in the Lexicon?played a significant role in linguistic theory, and indeed it would seem to be a question of performance rather than competence. However, if taken seriously, it leads to some radical conclusions about the organization of the grammar. In particular, the lexicon — the store of memorized elements — con
