A summary of atomic structure, necessary prerequisite to the later chapters on spectrophysics. A two-chapter survey, though necessarily superficial, will at least define some of the terms used in later chapters. Selections of books covering atomic and molecular structure in proper detail, at different degrees of rigour, are listed at the end of this and the next chapter.

Width and shape of spectral lines,source line profiles. Moreover, these profiles are of interest in themselves for the information they can give on source conditions and for the study of interatomic interactions and collision processes. In this chapter we consider the true line shape, as produced by an ideal spectrometer of infinite resolving power.
