Assemblies, defined in the BUILD system, perhaps even earlier, has a structure consisting of an assembly, containing a list of instances each referring to a single object or an assembly. The use of instances and transformations also appears in computer graphics, see Newman and Sproull [.], for example.

Projects, ents in the models shown in Fig. 15.1 and complete Table 15.1 with the number of faces, edges, vertices and inner contours. Remember, these are all Eulerian objects, with genus 0 and multiplicity 1. The two contours in object P6 should be considered part of the same object, they have a common face.

Case Studies,This chapter is an introduction to what you have now in CAD, it is about the end of the story. The intention is to relate CAD model creation to the rest of the book and to pose some of the questions that could be asked by a user. The chapter uses four arbitrary, made-up examples and explains sequences for making these.

How Objects Are Modelled,This chapter explains the modelling techniques, a little bit about the history of modelling and a lot about Boundary Representation, the technique currently used in most solid modelling CAD systems.

2D Shape Definition,This chapter describes the way in which basic 2D shapes are created before being extruded to create basic volumes. The chapter covers dimensions, constraints and other topic associated with modern shape creation tools.

Operations and Functionality,This chapter explains a number of basic operations, with a brief description of an algorithm, special cases and some experiments to do. This is not a complete set of operations but the core operations that are found in most systems.

Non-Manifold Models,This chapter describes special techniques to realise objects which do not exist in the real world. Normal objects are “manifold” objects but, during the 1980s, special techniques were developed to be able to represent idealised, or non-manifold objects. The techniques are common in CAD systems but the results are not always obvious.
