描述Magnetic fields are responsible for much of the variability andstructuring in the universe, but only on the Sun can the basicmagnetic field related processes be explored in detail. While severalexcellent textbooks have established a diagnostic foundation forexploring the physics of unmagnetized stellar atmospheres throughspectral analysis, no corresponding treatise for magnetized stellaratmospheres has been available. The present monograph fills this gap.The theoretical foundation for the diagnostics of stellar magnetism isdeveloped from first principles in a comprehensive way, both withinthe frameworks of classical physics and quantum field theory, togetherwith a presentation of the various solar applications. This textbookcan serve as an introduction to solar and stellar magnetism forastronomers and physicists at the graduate or advanced undergraduatelevel and will also become a resource book for more senior scientistswith a general interest in cosmic magnetic fields. .

Collisions, Partial Redistribution, and Turbulent Magnetic Fields,In the preceding chapters we have developed the foundations for treating general problems involving radiative scattering in a magnetic field. The theory however needs to be completed by including the effects of collisions and partial redistribution before it is ready for general use on the sun.

The framework of quantum field theory with a quantization of the electromagnetic field should however be used for a consistent treatment and a logical development of the theory of polarized radiative transfer in a magnetic field from first principles.

Instrumentation for Solar Polarimetry,racy, spectral, spatial, and time resolution, and spectral and spatial coverage. As it is not possible to optimize all these parameters simultaneously, various combinations of trade-offs are needed. The type of trade-off that one selects depends on the scientific objective of the observations.
