The Goal-Directed Nature of Early Sensory-Motor Coordinationsquate for at least two reasons. First, early sensory-motor systems are more integrated than Piaget believed them to be and they do not always function independently. Second, the development of early coordinations appears to come about through the operation of deliberate, goal-directed behaviour.

Early Perceptual-Motor Development: A Dynamical Systems Perspectivetrol. Bloch proposes an asymmetry in rate of development among systems becoming coordinated with each other. I propose that this illustrates the general principle in dynamical systems of new functions emerging from the interaction of aggregates of functional components.
