描述Geophysicists use seismic signals to image structures in the Earth‘s interior, to understand the mechanics of earthquake and volcanic sources, and to estimate their associated hazards. Keiiti Aki developed pioneering quantitative methods for extracting useful information from various portions of observed seismograms and applied these methods to many problems in the above fields. The Barrier Model and Strong Ground Motion,, who is one of the founders of this field. The mechanics of earthquake rupture are discussed with due emphasis on the various physical phenomena. The presentation is made in a tutorial manner, borrowing freely from Keiiti Aki’s papers, and endeavoring to emulate his unique style of clarity, simplicity and synthetic ability.
