描述Sedimentation as a Three-Component System describes the mostcommon stylesof deposition in marine environments as theyrelate to sediment composition.Three components, organicmatter, carbonate, and siliciclastic sediment, maysettleconcurrently, but at different rates, intermixing on the seafloor to form a particular sediment composition. A change intheflux of one component is capable of relatively dilutingor concentrating theother two components, which can beexpressed in the characteristic ratio of organic carbon tocarbonate in the resulting sediment. The basic conceptofthis book is to address organic carbon-carbonateassociations in terms of depositional inputs and time spans.In addition, the three-component system describes organiccarbon changes related to majorfacies transitions. Examplesinclude models of the genesis of carbonaceoussediments,with their various laminated to bioturbated lithotypes,andnumerical organic carbon prediction.
