Ion-Etching Techniques for Microstructural Characterization of Cemented Carbides and Ceramicsfeasibility of applying ion-etching methods for microstructural characterization of cemented carbides and ceramics is examined. Ion-etching is found to give improved contrast between binder phase grains in cemented carbides as well as reveal macroscopic heterogenieties in certain ceramics.

Aside from nickel and chromium, most nickel hard alloys contain boron and silicon, and often small amounts of additional carbon and iron. Boron is very slightly soluble in nickel. The boride Ni.B forms a low melting eutectic at about 1.000°C with nickel or nickel solid solution.

Binder-Carbide Phase Interactions in Titanium Carbide Base Systemsresence of a Ni-rich liquid phase. Binder Ti and Mo levels were measured using this technique, which has a major advantage over phase separation analysis due to the ability to locate the analysis position with respect to the microstructural components.
