Vibrissal Touch in PinnipedsPinnipeds (Pinnipedia) are aquatic carnivores of the families Phocidae (true seals), Otariidae (eared seals), and Odobenidae (walruses). All pinnipeds possess prominent vibrissae (whiskers) in the facial region. Pinnipeds use their whiskers for orientation by directly touching objects and by perceiving and analyzing water movements.

Texture from Touch. refers to the processing of information about surface material and microgeometry obtained from tactile exploration. Though textural information can be obtained both visually (Heller .) and auditorily (Lederman .), touch yields much finer and more complex textural information than do the other sensory modalities.

Introduction: The World of Touch,. There are multiple forms of touch, and the mechanosensory basis underlying touch perception must be divided into several distinct sub-modalities (such as vibration or pressure), as will be made clear by the contributions elsewhere in this encyclopaedia. The commonality of all touch sensing systems

Tactile Sensing in the Octopusan derive from this sense. . . has proved to be a useful tool for the investigation of how much a soft-bodied invertebrate animal can derive from contacts with its environment because it learns rapidly in the laboratory. The limits of its ability to discriminate can be deduced from the results of tr
