描述.Saliva as a unique sample for health assessment is gaining attention among researchers of different fields in the last 20 years; being reflected in an impressive increase in the number of papers published studying saliva from different biological aspects in human and veterinary species. Once deemed merely a digestive juice is now considered a biological fluid capable of communicating information about physiopathological processes occurring in organisms, since saliva has been shown to contain molecular and bacterial compounds that can change in response to local and systemic pathologies. Furthermore, the interest of saliva as a diagnostic, prognostic and monitoring biofluid is forced by its non-invasive nature being of easy and inexpensive sampling, involving only minimal discomfort and allowing the collection of multiple/repeated specimens at anytime, anywhere and without need for specialized staff.. .In this contributed volume, the authors bring together, summarize and reflect the generated knowledge about saliva as a source of biomarkers for health and welfare evaluation in humans and animal models. This volume also highlights the importance of confounding factors, such as sampl

Saliva as a Non-invasive Sample: Pros and Consdvantages when compared to other invasive and non-invasive matrixes, although it also possesses some drawbacks and limitations. The present chapter briefly describes the most employed saliva collection methods, the principal uses of saliva, and the main benefits and inconveniences of the use of this

Methodology Assays for the Salivary Biomarkers’ Identification and Measurementrease of sensitivity of those assays allowed their use in saliva samples, although it may require several adaptations. This chapter aims to offer a schematic view of the most important methods to discover and measure salivary biomarkers in human and veterinary species. For academic purposes, the dif

Salivary Biomarkers in Neurologic Diseasesmory and cognition. Because of their complicated causes and manifestations, early diagnosis of these neurological conditions remains a great challenge and may involve invasive and painful tests. In this chapter, we will review some studies revealing salivary biomarkers of most known ND in humans and

Salivary Biomarkers in the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Metabolic and Endocrine Diseases humans and different animal species. Currently, most information available comes from human medicine and studies performed with experimental animals such as mouse or rat, and less from other veterinary species. Furthermore, since obesity and its-related pathologies are currently recognised as the b

Salivary Markers in Inflammatory and Autoimmune Diseasesby chronic systemic inflammation are caused by immune system disorders that can affect different organs. Autoimmune diseases are of uncertain etiology, though genetic and environmental factors are known to play a role in their etiopathogenesis. They develop when intrinsic immune system damage result
