Influence of Rock Anisotropy on Stress Measurements by Overcoring Techniques,Except for a few techniques that attempt to measure the state of stress directly, most involve the measurement of strains or displacements resulting from disturbing the state of stress in the rock. Strains or displacements are related to stresses through assumptions about material behavior.

The work of Lekhnitskii (1963) is heavily referenced and used as a guide line for the present analysis. His model is extended to include the influence of a boundary stress component parallel to the hole axis.
