描述This book sheds new light on the complex inter-relations that make up class, power, local history and space. It turns community thinking on its head by understanding community not as an object but as a relational process with sociality at its core. Based on fieldwork from one market town and the work of Hannah Arendt, it demonstrates how a new approach to social practices can illuminate our understanding of commonality and communal being. Whilst community has become both a much-derided and much-touted term, this thought-provoking work shows that it is at the heart of social process. It will appeal to researchers of sociology, social policy, politics, public health and geography, as well as those involved in public policy design and implementation..

Building the Analyticommunity as an object, often one considered to be obsolete. Social science’s obsession with the state/individual axis is discussed. The concept of a relationality in which communality can be rethought as an action of being in common is discussed. The chapter also presents to the reader our research site, the town that we call Market-Town.

Plurality and the Space of Appearance a space of appearance, a place in which commonality can be expressed and understood. It develops further the analysis of the space of appearance as a concept and considers, through a number of examples from Market-Town, how plurality is achieved within the space of appearance.

The Web of Relationsconstantly changing. The chapter explores this and especially considers the relationship between the space of appearance and the web of relations. In considering how to study this web, the chapter engages with a number of examples, especially considering the role of what could be called a ‘moneyed web’ within the town.
