描述.This book lays the foundations for you to understand all that you always wanted to know about radioactivity. It begins by setting out essential information about the structure of matter, how radiation occurs and how it can be measured. It goes on to explore the substantial benefits of radioactivity through its many applications, and also the possible risks associated with its use..The field of radioactivity is explained in layman’s terms, so that everybody who is interested can improve their understanding of issues such as nuclear power, radiation accidents, medical applications of radiation and radioactivity from the environment..Everything is radioactive. There is natural radioactivity in the homes that we live in, the food that we eat and the air that we breath. For over 100 years, people have recognised the potential for radioactivity to help solve problems and improve our standard of living. This has led to the creation of radioactivity levels in some places that are much higher than naturally-occurring background levels. Such high levels of radiation can be harmful to people and the environment, so there is a clear need to manage this potential harm and to make the risk wort

What Happens When It Goes Wrong?,e pleased to find some pieces of (for example) nice-looking silver-coloured cobalt metal: tragically, this was highly radioactive and dangerous. Table . shows a number of examples of losses of radioactive sources and events of accidental irradiations.

What Have We Learned?,diation, which has sometimes been at a level several times higher than it is at the moment, and it has very rarely caused us problems, which is why we never evolved a sense for this radiation. In the past century, the human race has learned how to put radioactivity and radiation to good use for nuclear power, for nuclear medicine and in industry.

How Can We Use Radioactivity Destructively?,Frisch, a chemist, had explained correctly what had happened. Lise Meitner was not impressed by the physics expertise of Otto Hahn (whose surname means “chicken”), and she was reported to have said, “My little chicken, you understand nothing about physics!”.

How Can We Make Radiation?,. If, in addition, cosmic rays are considered, particles with energies even in excess of 1 TeV are available, albeit with very low intensity. In the following sections, the main methods of production of ionising radiation are described, along with their important applications in medicine and in batteries.

Why Should I Read This Book?,m artificial sources produced by mankind came into play in the twentieth century. These radioactive sources were produced by some impressive developments in science and technology, and in turn they helped spur further developments, including of course in medical diagnostics and therapy.
