Radiological Environmental Research Conducted at the Site of the Sinking of the “Komsomolets” Nuclea submarine “Scorpion” sank with two Mark 45 Astor torpedoes with nuclear warheads on board [.]. Other nuclear-powered submarine wrecks have also occurred. However, the Komsomolets sinking caused the greatest world-wide repercussions.

Hydrogeological Investigations and Radionuclide Migration in Groundwater at the Nevada Test Site conducted for each test and longer-term studies are underway to assess the regional environmental impact. Studies now in progress have not identified any impact on the regional groundwater flow system from testing, but local effects have been discovered.

Both caesium and strontium are soluble in water, but their mobility in natural environments is retarded by their strong interactions with soil organic materials, clay minerals, and iron oxides.
