The System of Safety Assurance for Facilities of the Ministry of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federaand technology. The sector consists of 29 power-generating units at nine AES [nuclear power plants], the industrial enterprise “Atommash,” and other enterprises and organizations. Fig. 1 shows the location of the nuclear installations on the map of Russia.

Long-Term Storage of Plutoniumd of the Cold War and the new arms control agreements are leading to the retirement of large numbers of nuclear weapons. In addition, much of the nuclear material at the DOE sites has been declared surplus, which has resulted in inventories of plutonium that exceed defense needs and will necessitate longer term storage until final disposition.
