描述Large area sky surveys are now a reality in the radio, IR,optical and X-ray passbands. In the next few years, new surveys usingoptical, UV and IR mosaic cameras with high throughput digitaldetectors will expand the dynamic range and accuracy of photometry andastrometry of objects over a significant fraction of the entire sky.Parallel X-ray and radio surveys over the same areas will produceastronomical image and spectroscopic databases of unprecedented sizeand quality. The combined data sets will provide significant newconstraints on star formation, stellar dynamics, Galactic structure,the evolution of galaxies and large scale structure, as well as newopportunities to identify rare objects in the solar system and theGalaxy. Large area surveys have formidable data acquisition,processing, archiving, and data distribution demands and this meetingprovided a forum for sharing experiences amongst workers specializingin different wavebands as well as discussing how multibandobservations can reveal fundamental relationships in our understandingof the Universe.

Prospects for Future Astrometric Missionsfor a mission within the next five years would be through a collaborative effort for a small, fast, cheap spacecraft which could be a precursor for future, larger, more accurate missions, which are under study.

Denis: a Deep Near Infrared Southern Sky Surveyyear mainly dedicated to technical tests and pilot surveys of selected regions of high astronomical interest. In September 1996, approximately 3000 square degrees of the sky have been covered, and the survey should be completed in 1999.

The Miyun 232 MHz General Catalogueatalogue, using a matching radius of 100 arcseconds. The remaining MGC objects were then matched with the B2/B3 (408 MHz), 4C (178 MHz), Texas (365 MHz, 1400 MHz) and 87GB (4.85 GHz) catalogues. 6850 MGC sources were found to lack any radio counterpart in these reference catalogues. It means 19.9% of sources listed in the MGC are probably new.

The Prospects of Large Surveys in Astronomyf the extent to which these two approaches—emphasis on instrumental capabilities, as contrasted to emphasis on sky coverage—also contribute to an increase in astrophysical understanding. Here, the distinction needs to be made between discovering a new phenomenon and understanding its underlying processes.
