Picosecond Modulation Spectroscopy in Sodium Vaporr. The time integrated four wave mixed signal modulates with increasing excitation delay with a period of 1.9 psec corresponding to the 6Å splitting of the D lines. The modulation persists well into the region where the 7 nsec excitation pulses no longer overlap and far beyond the 100 psec correlation time of either laser.

Modulated Pumping in Cs with Picosecond Pulse Trainsng atomic substates and therefore can be used to measure the energy splitting between these states [1]. In this context optical pumping with a pulse train has often been mentioned but only scarcely applied for quantitative measurements.

Observation of 517 Ghz Fine Structure Quantum-Beats in Nad in this contribution. For the first time quantum-beats, which are due to the fine structure splitting of the first excited electronic state in Na, have been measured. With a beat frequency of 517 GHz this is the fastest quantum-beat signal observed so far.

Polarization Selective Detection of Hyperfine Quantum Beats in Cshese investigations have been performed to test the method for measurements of splitting frequencies in the 10 GHz range and to verify a theroretical model which has been derived for description of atomic coherence in alkaline atoms.

Picosecond Photodynamics of the Excited States of Organic Compounds in Solution Using Time Resolved vent assisted electronic level inversion. In the second one we have studied interactions between an intramolecular charge transfer state and polar environment. Before discussing these results, we present the apparatus we have built in our lab.
