Water Movement and Volume Change in Swelling Systemsneath man-made structures is a well known phenomenon as is consolidation associated with drainage and exploitation of aquifers. Analogous problems arise also in the chemical engineering processes of sedimentation, centrifugation and filtration where liquid is separated from a consolidating solid in two-phase systems.
