What Is Dementia and Late-Stage Dementia?,Dementia—or major neurocognitive disorder (DSM-V)—encompasses a group of diseases that affect several, if not all, cognitive functions. The diseases invariably have a fatal ending, and, as of now, there is no cure for any of them.

Thinking About Communication in Late-Stage Dementia,In Chapter ., we concluded that there is a lack of knowledge regarding how people living with late-stage dementia engage in communication with other people. The impact of severe cognitive and linguistic challenges on relationships and communication remains unclear, as does the effect of the diminished role of spoken language in social interaction.
