Developments in thestructure of children‘s sentences during the first few years of lifeare traced to changes in the setting of specific grammaticalparameters. Some surprising differences between the early childgrammars of French and English are uncovered, differences that canonly be explained on the basis of subtle distinctions in inflectionalstructure. This motivates the author‘s claim that functional ornonthematic categories are represented in the grammars of very youngchildren.
