Information Patterns,t want. All the patterns in this chapter relate to how we consume and organize content. Irresistible apps let users find desired information quickly, encouraging them to swiftly dip in to find something they need. Once there, however, they often discover an intriguing branch and head off deeper into the app.

Understanding Motivational Dark Patterns,y—be it the constant barrage of advertising or inducements to slow down the car or spend more time in the supermarket—practitioners must still be wary of the ethical implications of designing irresistible apps. One man’s retention is another’s ensnarement.

Monetary Dark Patterns, view these patterns as a means for companies to extract extra money from users, while an accountant might conclude these patterns are actually good short-term business. As with all dark patterns, users will eventually spot what is happening and become resentful, so those patterns are poor long-term business strategies.

Patterns as Design Tools,ng patterns in this way not only helps provide the answers to “Why will our audience come back to the application?” but also helps bring such questions to an earlier stage in the design process, avoiding the “If you build it, they will come” design mentality.
