Transport and Housekeeping of Calcium in Fish Gills,l uptake of ions in fresh water, therefore, requires that ions move through the cells crossing the plasma membrane barrier twice. But in the sea water environment, the branchial epithelium shows characteristics of a leaky epithelium, allowing ion movement(s) through the cells as well as along paracellular routes.
