描述.This textbook introduces the reader to the basic concepts and equations that describe stellar structure. Various approximation techniques are used to solve equations, and an intuitive rather than rigorous approach is employed to interpret the properties of the stars. The book provides step-by-step instructions, helpful exercises and relevant historical lessons to familiarize students with key concepts and mathematical theories..Based upon a series of one-semester (12 weeks) elective undergraduate courses offered at the University of Regina, this book is intended for students who are interested in seeing how basic calculus and introductory physics can be applied to the understanding of the stars from their formation to their death. The text provides an intermediate stepping stone between lower-level undergraduate classes and more specialized postgraduate texts on the subject of stellar structure..

Star Formation, rought together at the right temperature, at the right density and in the right place. It is easier to not make stars than it is to make them, but as with all difficult things, nature has found a way.

Knowing the Stars, ight of past history, the stars remain modern objects in the sense that they continue to challenge our intellect and because there are still many aspects of their structure and evolution that astronomers do not fully understand.

The Ravages of Time, ntral temperature and density reach levels at which hydrogen fusion reactions can begin. Once the fusion reactions start within its central regions, the protostar will stop contracting and a . main sequence star will have formed (as described in Chap. 4).

Selected Topics and Case Studies, ence communication works. Indeed, one of the most important aspects of being (and becoming) an astronomer is to . the literature—what are other researchers doing, where are their arguments weak, where are they strong; where have other researchers gone wrong in the interpretation of the data, where have they made the right choices, etc.

From the Outside In,is a consequence of our perception of time. The Sun may seem constant to our senses and memory, but it is undergoing continuous change and struggle. Each second, its composition alters ever so slightly (as we shall see in Chap. .), and it fights against the ever-present threat of gravitational collapse.
