Increasing Secondary Ion Yields: Derivatization/SIMS paper discusses mechanisms of ion production from adsorbed organics. The production of positively-charged ions is emphasized, but the mechanisms proposed are just as applicable to negatively-charged species. From understanding of the mechanisms, one can optimize the production of ions and thereby increase the sensitivity of a SIMS analysis.
