描述This book is the first of its kind to investigate the ongoing significance of industrial craft in deindustrialising places such as Australia. Providing an alternative to the nostalgic trope of the redundant factory ‘craftsman’, this book introduces the intriguing and little-known trade of engineering patternmaking, where objects are brought to life through the handmade ‘originals’ required for mass production..Drawing on oral histories collected by the author, this book highlights the experiences of industrial craftspeople in Australian manufacturing, as they navigate precarious employment, retraining, gendered career pathways, creative expression and technological change. The book argues that digital fabrication technologies may modify or transform industrial craft, but should not obliterate it. Industrial craft is about more than the rudimentary production of everyday objects: it is about human creativity, material knowledge and meaningful work, and it will be key to human survival in the troubled times ahead..

Navigating Class and Populist Politics in Contemporary Oral History Practice, has brought a fresh set of challenges and tensions regarding social class, power relations and politics. This chapter engages with the question of what it means to conduct interviews with manufacturing workers in the twenty-first century, in the context of populist politics and deeply embedded soci

,The Patternmaker’s Toolbox: Making Things on the Side in Industrial Craft Apprenticeship, tternmaking apprenticeship, in the context of twentieth-century Australian manufacturing. This practice is contextualised within the broader customary practice of making ‘foreigners’. A ‘foreigner’ is an Australian colloquial term referring to a practice whereby workers produce personal objects at w

Industrial Craft as Design Knowledge: Hidden Intermediaries of Design and Production,rk in fields that are related to, but are not, strictly speaking, industrial design. Through analysing oral histories with Australian engineering patternmakers, this chapter argues that patternmakers possess and enact a form of expertise and design knowledge that has thus far been undervalued. ,‘Just Finishing’: From Manual Patternmaking to CNC Machine Milling, challenges the deterministic notions that technological change is always inevitable and that manufacturing is now a fully automated arena without need for industrial craft. It does so by engaging with the experiences of engineering patternmakers who have experienced the relatively recent transition

ropose to exploit such structure to facilitate high-level scene understanding. By robustly fitting a texture projection model to optimal dominant frequency estimates in image patches, we arrive at a projective-invariant method to localize such semantically meaningful regions in multi-planar scenes.

Jesse Adams Steina ball, an autonomous car should recognize what is going on and respond immediately. This is a very challenging problem for four reasons. First, only partial actions are observed. Second, there is a large variability in negative data. Third, the start of the action is unknown, so it is unclear over
