Urban Spaces and Bodies,manufacturing jobs to overseas countries, and the targeting of poor people of color by politicians and law enforcement. Referencing key studies and scholars, Oware details the deleterious effects on inner-city residents in the Bronx and Los Angeles. Yet, out of this despair, drawing on their creativity, residents create hip hop and rap music.

Bad Bitches?,d propriety by women. Yet, Oware suggests women’s agency may simultaneously undercut and perpetuate the view of them as sex objects for male enjoyment. Hence, some feminist messages of empowerment and sexual liberation possibly reinforce stereotypical, caricatured, and overly sexualized images of women as a group.

Coming Straight from the Underground,ubjects in their music—more so than rappers of color. Iggy Azalea illustrates this point, but Macklemore contradicts it by addressing the topic of white privilege in his lyrics. Overall, the author argues that the distinction between underground and mainstream rap is manufactured and mutable for some, but distinct and separate for others.

The Queer Emcee,confront homophobia in hip hop. However, Oware contends that the provisional tolerance of lesbians remains predicated on lyrics that promote straight male erotic fantasy—women who rhyme about sexual congress with other women receive endorsement. Queer and gay males who rap about sexual relations with other men remain marginalized.
