Demand Forecastingn and hydropower generation. The topics discussed include micro-component and per capita approaches, crop simulation models, and optimisation of hydropower operations. The developing area of Global Hydrological Models (GHMs) is also considered and their role in estimating water use in climate change impact assessments.

Impact-Based Forecasting and Warningd risk-based techniques, using probabilistic forecasts. This chapter describes the background to these approaches and provides examples for a range of flood warning, reservoir and other applications. Examples include early warning dissemination systems from the USA and Bangladesh.

Reservoirs and Tidal Barriersed Reservoir Operations (FIRO), in which operating rules are modified dynamically, typically based on inflows estimated from ensemble meteorological forecasts. The chapter concludes with a discussion of tidal barriers, including the Thames Barrier in London, the Cardiff Bay Barrage in Wales and the Maeslant Barrier in the Netherlands.

Introduction, science and artificial intelligence. Flood, drought and other early warning systems are considered too, with a particular focus on end-to-end warning systems, including the WMO/UNDRR Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative.

Water Resources and Seasonal Forecastingonal or global scale. This chapter presents an introduction to these techniques, including to the National Water Model in the USA, the principles of water resources planning and the rapidly developing area of seasonal flow forecasting for water resources applications.

Introduction,ts and river basin management. Typically, meteorological observations and forecasts are used as inputs to hydrological models, whose outputs are then processed into a range of products tailored to operational needs. Increasingly this includes estimates for the uncertainty in forecasts, based on prob
