描述This is an important and timely volume. The history of research in homocysteine metabolism can be divided into three periods. The first phase was the exploration of the individual reactions and metabolites that characterize the transmethylation and transsulfuration sequences. The former originated with his description of the biosynthesis of methylpyridine and culminated in the work of Cantoni and Axelrod. Similarly the finding that insulin contained cystine was a potent catalyst for the metabolic and nutritional studies of Rose and du Vigneaud. The description and the definition of homocystinuria, a rare inherited meta bolic disorder, marked the beginning of the second historical period. Where previously there had been few laboratories located largely in the United States soon there were numerous research groups representing many nationalities. The more intense focus led to major advances, both in the laboratory and in the clinics. Studies of afflicted individuals, when combined with investigations in experimental animals, provided the basis for a concept of methionine metabo lism that encompassed both transmethylation and transsulfuration. The central role of homocysteine was ap

Reference Ranges for Homocysteine Concentrations, disease. Therefore care should be taken in defining the range in which the results of 95% of a healthy population would be expected to fall. Subjects should constitute a random sample of the healthy population and the procedure should be standardized to exclude pre-analytical factors that may impact

Epidemiology of Homocysteine Levels and Relation to Vitamins, ociated consistently with lower levels of the B group vitamins—folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B.. The most consistent associations have been described for lower folate intake and lower folate levels in the blood, and approximately 20–30 percent of the adult U.S. population may be affected. Vascular Complications of Homocystinuria: Incidence, Clinical Pattern and Treatment, emical and genetic standpoint and, at the same time, strategies for therapeutic intervention have been identified and are currently being tested with some success. The metabolic abnormality thought to be responsible for the clinical events is the plasma accumulation and urinary excretion of homocyst

Homocysteine as a Risk Factor for Peripheral Vascular Disease, mildly elevated homocysteine levels and atherosclerosis has been documented. The identification of a large number of people with elevated homocysteine levels due to genetic and/or dietary effects has pushed research to evaluate the question of whether homocysteine is a modifiable risk factor for at

Homocysteine as a Risk Factor for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke, ease and stroke. There are also preliminary data linking hyperhomocysteinemia with cognitive decline in the elderly and specifically with vascular and non-vascular dementia. However, much of the current data are based on cross-sectional and case control study designs that are susceptible to selectio
