描述Our lives and well being intimately depend on the exploitation of the plant genetic resources available to our breeding programs. Therefore, more extensive exploration and effective exploitation of plant genetic resources are essential prerequisites for the release of improved cultivars. Accordingly, the remarkable progress in genomics approaches and more recently in sequencing and bioinformatics offers unprecedented opportunities for mining germplasm collections, mapping and cloning loci of interest, identifying novel alleles and deploying them for breeding purposes. This book collects 48 highly interdisciplinary articles describing how genomics improves our capacity to characterize and harness natural and artificially induced variation in order to boost crop productivity and provide consumers with high-quality food. This book will be an invaluable reference for all those interested in managing, mining and harnessing the genetic richness of plant genetic resources.

Genetics and Genomics of Flowering Time Regulation in Sugar Beetd involves many regulatory pathways, which perceive, transduce and integrate both endogenous and environmental cues for the fine tuning of flowering. Therefore, broad approaches to study flowering time in beets have been initiated, including both forward and reverse genetic studies to elucidate the

Introgression Libraries with Wild Relatives of Cropsioneer studies conducted in tomato, collections of ILs representing different fractions of the exotic parent genome have been developed for a wide range of crops. The results indicate that crop wild relatives are a rich reservoir of potentially valuable alleles, many of which would not have been pre

Microphenomics for Interactions of Barley with Fungal Pathogensormation protocols, and automated microscopy and phenotyping that we called “microphenomics”. It was used to address the function of genes in nonhost- and race-nonspecific host resistance of barley interacting with the powdery mildew fungus . More than 1,300 genes derived from plant or fungal genome

Bridging Conventional Breeding and Genomics for A More Sustainable Wheat Productiontasis before they can be effectively selected using genomic selection. Similarly, the importance of genotype– by environment interactions will require extensive field testing and more sophisticating genomic selection models to identify lines for the target set of environments.

Identification and Implementation of Resistance: Genomics-Assisted use of Genetic Resources for Bree and improved our understanding of molecular wheat-powdery mildew interactions. For thenecrotrophic pathogen Stagonospora nodorum much of the interaction was found to be based on pathogen toxins and host susceptibility genes. The work on specific gene-for-gene interactions opened new possibilities f
