One group describes electrostatic phenomena, the other magnetic phenomena. In this chapter we look at the first group, and at the electrostatic fields it describes.

Here we apply the method to what may be considered classical electromagnetic problems. The understanding of the solution of these important problems may be seen as a natural extension of classical electromagnetism.

For these, other methods, using the finite element technique, were developed. The most commonly used of these is the “Galerkin method.” It is a particular form of the more general “weighted residual” method, whose principles were outlined in Chapter 8.
