Heterochrony, Deferred Breeding, and Avian Sociality,nterest (cf. Gould, 1977; Nelson, 1978). The focus of the renaissance is the phenomenon of heterochrony. A complex concept, heterochrony refers to changes in the timing of ontogeny, specifically to shifts in development of one organ system with respect to other systems (Gould, 1977).
