Achim Schmid,Pascal Siemsen,Ralf Götzee cells of . are loosely surrounded by a sheath-like envelope which tends to balloon at the cell poles. In this communication we present some results of an as yet rather preliminary analysis of the structure of this outer sheath.

The Surface Layers of ,, division alternating at right angles to the previous division to form square arrays (Murray 1963, Kuhn and Starr 1965). Cells within the sheet are held together by slender fibres, which are disposed between adjacent cells, as well as between the outer membrane and RS-lavers (Chapman et al. 1963).
