描述Despite the boom in scholarship in both Comics Studies and Memory Studies, the two fields rarely interact—especially with issues beyond the representation of traumatic and autobiographical memories in comics. With a focus on the roles played by styles and archives—in their physical and metaphorical manifestations—this edited volume offers an original intervention, highlighting several novel ways of thinking about comics and memory as comics memory. Bringing together scholars as well as cultural actors, the contributions combine studies on European and North American comics and offer a representative overview of the main comics genres and forms, including superheroes, Westerns, newspaper comics, diary comics, comics reportage and alternative comics. In considering the many manifestations of memory in comics as well as the functioning and influence of institutions, public and private practices, the book exemplifies new possibilities for understanding the complex entanglements of memory and comics..

It also offers some initial thoughts on gender and nostalgia and on the way some dominant discourses around childhood are disrupted by accounts of comic reading, making forgotten aspects of childhood experience visible.

The Ever-Shifting Wall: Edmond Baudoin and the “Continuous Poem” of Autobiographyrs. Taking in account comics-making as a potentially archival art, and by focusing on a number of textual and representational strategies of the author, we will engage with how Baudoin thematizes that which Carolyn Steedman called the difficulties of retrieving past traces.

Keep Out, or Else: Diary as Body in , and both fictional and real. Considering the diaristic conventions of the “keep out or else” notices included in each text, as well as the fantasies of self-harm each protagonist engages, this chapter excavates the possibilities and boundaries of such a performative, textual surrogacy.

The Un-Erotic Dancer: Sylvie Rancourt’s struction of Melody as an innocent girl who falls haphazardly into exotic dancing to survive. The reconstruction of her episodic memory promotes greater sympathy and understanding for a sex worker, for her tawdry life, leading ultimately to Rancourt’s self-empowerment and self-understanding.

: Bridging Personal and Collective Memories of L’Association and Comics Historyyears of the 2005–2010 “crisis-panic” of L’Association with, on the one side, the old-fashioned world of classic Franco-Belgian comics and on the other, the not-so-new-anymore world of L’Association. Hence, Trondheim illustrates with humor how an adventure of Spirou can be read as a bridge between comics and memory.
