Thermodynamics of a Non-Equilibrium Quantum System — Resonance Fluorescence reservoir (spontaneous emission into the radiation field). If the driving field were absent the atom would merely relax into equilibrium with the reservoir and the usual Wigner Weisskopf theory for a damped atom would apply. The effect of the driving field is to maintain the atom away from equilibrium in a new nonequilibrium steady state.

The Laser — Trailblazer of Synergeticsaces. The laser-active atoms of the material are pumped energetically from the outside and emit laser light through one of the mirrors. The two mirrors form a Perot-Fabry-interferometer which allows only for those modes, whose wavelengths obey the relation (fig. 2) . (n is an integer and L is the distance between the mirrors).
