描述Interest in the occurrence and behaviour of volatile organiccompounds (VOCs) is increasing due to their adverse effects on theenvironment and human health. It is essential that information ismade available on the various aspects of research on VOCs to enablebetter understanding and control of the various environmental andhuman health threats. The information in this book will be used toimprove communication and understanding of the various approaches. Inparticular the potential and limitations of the described analyticalmethods will be essential in defining environmental studies andinterpreting the results.

VOCs often exist as vapors or liquids at room temperature but may also be in the form of solids (e.g. naphthalene and para-dichlorobenzene, used as mothballs and bathroom deodorants).

VOCs are used as fuels, solvents for paints, varnishes, lacquers, inks, glues and pesticides, cleaning and drying of metals and instruments, intermediates for the synthesis of other chemicals, etc.
