描述Some years ago a book reviewer, perhaps with Freudian honesty, remarked that the book in question ‘filled a much needed gap in the literature‘. That phrase has haunted the writing of this gap-filler and this preface may be considered an apologia. For a number of years I have found myself teaching various groups of students about cell locomotion and cell behaviour: sometimes science students specializing in cell or molecular biology, sometimes immunologists or pathologists who only wanted a broad background introduction. Those students who were enthusiastic, or who wished to appear so, asked for a general background text (to explain my lectures perhaps), and that is what I hope this book will provide. With luck, other scientists who have only a peripheral interest in cell movement will also find this a useful overview. The more proximate origin of the book was a special ‘option‘ subject which I taught for two years to our Senior Honours Cell Biology students in Glasgow.

Introduction,y approach, and this is not an area solely for the narrow specialist. The phenomena of cell movement have an appeal at a primitive or childlike level. Movement catches the eye and begs the questions: ‘how?, why?, what for?‘. The apparent naivety of the questions does not mean that they will be answered easily.

Cell-Cell Interactions, may recoil or again may fasten irreversibly to their partner. We know little about the molecular bases for the differences in behaviour, and relatively little is being done to remedy this deficiency, yet a multitude of problems in the body arise through alterations of cellular behaviour.

Massimo Zeviani,Valerio Carelliered in this chapter. The most important of these, and in many ways the most novel, is the mechanism by which flagellated bacteria propel themselves. We will also consider a ‘pure’ conformational motor, a rapid-acting assembly-driven motor and, somewhat superficially, some examples of hydraulic systems.

Molecular Biology of the OXPHOS System, omotory activities. Although ‘locomotion’ may seem an overly pedantic term, it implies with less ambiguity than ‘movement’ the activity of moving from place-to-place, and as such is a convenient usage.

https://doi.org/10.1007/b138526o point out that for bacteria the phenomenon described as chemotaxis is not a true chemotaxis at all but a klinokinesis with adaptation, but the usage has become so firmly established that it is unlikely to change.
