描述Caterpillars are excellent model organisms for understanding how multiple selective forces shape the ecology and evolution of insects, and organisms in general. Recent research using the tools of modern molecular biology, genetics, metabolomics, microbial ecology, experiments conducted at a global level, network analysis, and statistical analyses of global data sets, combined with basic natural history, are yielding exciting new insights into caterpillar adaptations and ecology. The best way to view these research advances is within a framework of tri-trophic interactions. This is a timely topic for research given the central role of caterpillars and plants in the ecology and trophic structure of terrestrial communities. This book is unique in that it contains chapters from a team of experts on a diversity of key topics within caterpillar-plant interactions. This volume brings together contributions by researchers from around the globe, working in both tropical and temperate habitats, and in human-managed and more natural habitats. It is a significant contribution to our understanding of insect biology, and the role that insects, as represented by caterpillars, play in a world incre

Surface Warfare: Plant Structural Defenses Challenge Caterpillar Feedinggrowth and development. To counter this extensive loss of plant biomass that significantly affects their growth, development, and fitness, plants have evolved a suite of structural and chemical defenses. Structural defenses, including surface waxes and trichomes, are primarily present at the leaf su

Impacts of Plant Defenses on Host Choice by Lepidoptera in Neotropical Rainforestsing the mechanisms promoting and maintaining species diversity and niche differentiation in both trophic levels (Becerra 2015). Theory has long predicted that the evolution of plant anti-herbivore defenses and insect counter-adaptations is the driver of trait diversification and coevolution (Ehrlich

Sequestered Caterpillar Chemical Defenses: From “Disgusting Morsels” to Model Systemse one hand, they not only need to cope with the compounds in the plants on which they feed, they also need to have the physiology to be able to store those compounds. On the other hand, they need to deploy these defenses in the most effective way possible and escape or survive attack by their own na

Natural History and Ecology of Caterpillar Parasitoidsllars are sandwiched, and they have played a profound role in shaping caterpillar morphology, ecology, physiology, and behavior. Here, we review the natural histories and ecologies found in major parasitoid groups, with focus on the ichneumonoid wasps (especially Braconidae) and the Tachinidae (or “

Caterpillar Responses to Ant Protectors of Plantsed plants manage to reach maturity. How do these caterpillars make it to pupation and adulthood while using host plants that receive biotic protection from ants?.We examine the various ways in which plants support ant defense, the kinds of protection they may receive from ants, and how ant species c
