Occurrence and distribution of carotenoids in photosynthetic systems,many workers continue to employ saponification as an obligatory step during the extraction procedure; at the very least this will cause minor losses of the carotenoids present but it may change the whole nature of the extract by removing xanthophyll esters or destroying some carotenoids.
