Engineering Materials and Processesion of the magnitude of a first order removal coefficient of SO. in the real atmosphere. Based on the results of the field experiments a reaction chamber was designed for laboratory measurements to study the removal coefficient as a function depending upon the chemical properties of selected heterogeneous systems.

Engineering Materials and Processeseasurements are discussed in the light of improved 1 D models concerning the stratospheric sulfur budget. The results clearly show that tropospheric SO. is of only minor importance for the non-volcanic formation of the stratospheric aerosol.
