影响因子4.1.1 Demographic significance Confined populations grow more rapidly than populations from which dispersal is permitted (Lidicker, 1975; Krebs, 1979; Tamarin et at., 1984), and demography in island populations where dispersal is restricted differs greatly from nearby mainland populations (Lidicker, 1973; Tamarin, 1977, 1978; Gliwicz, 1980), clearly demonstrating the demographic signi ficance of dispersal. The prevalence of dispersal in rapidly expanding populations is held to be the best evidence for presaturation dispersal. Because dispersal reduces the growth rate of source populations, it is generally believed that emigration is not balanced by immigration, and that mortality of emigrants occurs as a result of movement into a ‘sink‘ of unfavourable habitat. If such dispersal is age- or sex-biased, the demo graphy of the population is markedly affected, as a consequence of differ ences in mortality in the dispersive sex or age class. Habitat heterogeneity consequently underlies this interpretation of dispersal and its demographic consequences, although the spatial variability of environments is rarely assessed in dispersal studies.

The genetic consequences of dispersaltain genetic variation, and if so, how does dispersal interact with this heterogeneity to affect levels of variability? Does gene flow bind a species together into a homogeneous unit, or can adaptation and divergence occur despite free intermingling? Do genetic factors, such as levels of inbreeding,

Habitat heterogeneity and dispersal: environmental and genetic patchiness Adaptive interpretation of dispersal therefore requires an understanding of heterogeneity in the physical, genetical and social environments to which animals are exposed. This chapter is concerned with the physical and genetical environment, and introduces theory and relevant data which suggests th

Social factors in immigration and emigrationng cohesiveness of group members, and establishing the order of access to resources. Because dispersal (emigration and immigration) of small mammals occurs in a social milieu, social behaviour has often been proposed as a cause of emigration or a limit to immigration. Likewise, social behaviour may

Small mammal dispersal in pest management and conservationction of endangered species, etc. Most of these aspects are important with regard to small mammals although few such species are regarded as game animals. Dispersal has usually not been considered as an important factor in the management of small mammals, but I will here try to show that it is. Spec

Do large mammals disperse like small mammals?ited treatment in carnivores (.) and primates (Chapter 11), and with a few exceptions (.) is largely neglected in ungulates. Since these species are visible and well described, one would have expected the dispersal phenomenon to be thoroughly documented; yet it is not. I define ‘dispersal’ as one-wa

The primate perspective on dispersalf dispersal. First, many species of small mammals have generation lengths of much less than one year and give birth to large litters, with the result that most show strong seasonal fluctuations in numbers and some show longer cyclical fluctuations. Much dispersal in these species is connected with t
