影响因子The book is an introduction to the philosophy of mind. While a number of such introductions are available, this book differs from others in that, while rejecting the dualist approach associated in particular with Descartes, it also casts serious doubt on the forms of materialism that now dominate English language philosophy. Drawing in particular on the work of Wittgenstein, a central place is given to the importance of the notion of a human being in our thought about ourselves and others.

Human Beings,nd, dualism and, on the other, some version of the thesis that the mind is the brain. If we simply take this for granted we are — given the position that the sciences now have in our culture and the popular perception of what has been achieved by science — almost bound to reach the conclusion that t

Die empirisch-wissenschaftliche Sichtm about what kinds of thing exist. Descartes’ central error, on this view, lies in his suggestion that, in addition to the physical bodies recognized by the sciences, there are also non-material entities with which some of those physical bodies are closely causally linked.
