影响因子Chronic and excessive alcohol consumption disrupts a number of biologic sys tems. Central nervous system pathology, associated with long-standing alcohol ingestion, has particularly deleterious consequences to the individual. Compro mising brain functional integrity ultimately militates against psychosocial ad justment, and this process is inevitably reflected as a substantial economic loss to society in the form of costs for providing medical and social services, as well as disability and absenteeism from work. This book marshals the literature pertinent to the effects of chronic alcohol abuse on brain structure and functioning. The material is divided into two parts: basic research and clinical issues. In the first section, the manifest neurologic consequences are described across the different levels of biologic organization, these being brain morphology, neurochemistry, neurophysiology, and neuro psychology. In recognition of the multifactorial etiology of alcohol-related brain pathology, the influence and role of hepatic, endocrine, and nutritional factors are also examined. The second section addresses clinical syndromes and dis orders. It will be noted that evidence acc

Ethanol’s Action on Brain Biochemistryon and transmission. Using electrophysiologic techniques, one can directly assess the effects of ethanol on neuronal activity, and such studies have been performed (e.g., see reference 1). However, insights into the molecular mechanisms by which ethanol affects neuronal activity have, at present, be

Nutrition and Alcoholismes will provide the reader with a background into specific methods used to evaluate nutritional status and the possible shortcomings of these techniques. Evidence for protein/calorie malnutrition will be provided in individual sections concerning alcoholics either with or without liver disease. Next

The common name for this neurologic dysfunction associated with advanced liver disease is “hepatic coma.” The recognition and definition of this syndrome have a long and ta

Neuropsychology of Alcoholismficiency, visuospatial integration, and learning capacity are reported frequently in such individuals.. Within the population of “social” drinkers, neuropsychologic capacity correlates negatively with alcohol consumption variables,. suggesting that the threshold for neurologic disruption may be lowe

In living systems, particles, atoms, and molecules, for example, are subsystems of the larger entities of cells, organs, and organisms of which they are comprised.
