Computational Methods for Molecular Imaginge most vulnerable neurons are particularly sensitive to oxidative stress and rise in intracellular calcium concentrations. Because both events seem to occur in Parkinson’s disease this may explain why some dopaminergic neurons degenerate and other do not.

Mathematics and Molecular Neurobiology disease detection in subjects suspected to be at risk for developing IPD has become possible using [.I]β-CIT or other ligands for the dopamine transporter. Furthermore, with SPECT one is probably able to monitor in an objective way the efficacy of new pharmacological therapies.
