Referencing key studies and scholars, Oware details the deleterious effects on inner-city residents in the Bronx and Los Angeles. Yet, out of this despair, drawing on their creativity, residents create hip hop and rap music.

The Queer Emcee,confront homophobia in hip hop. However, Oware contends that the provisional tolerance of lesbians remains predicated on lyrics that promote straight male erotic fantasy—women who rhyme about sexual congress with other women receive endorsement. Queer and gay males who rap about sexual relations with other men remain marginalized.
