Both E Prostaglandins and prolonged indomethacin treatment exert trophic effects on the gastric muco was first shown in our laboratories, when rats were treated with high doses of metiamide, a precursor of cimetidine.. It was later confirmed with cimetidine. and was subsequently also observed with prolonged antacid treatments.. In all these studies a hyperplasia of the parietal cells was observed.
