Town and Country, much of the sixteenth century. By the early seventeenth century, however, Scotland’s urban population was starting to grow. By the 1750s over 9 per cent of the population lived in towns with over 10,000 inhabitants and 16 per cent in towns with over 2,000. Scotland was fast becoming one of the most urbanised societies in Europe.
