Amounts and Measures of Amount, only which are amounts of such things as water or gold, objects designated by what Terence Parsons. has called ‘applied amount terms’ — phrases like ‘ten pounds of water’ or ‘three teaspoons of gold’, the result of concatenating a numeral, the name of a unit of measurement, and a word or phrase with the grammatical syntax of a mass noun.魔鬼在游行 发表于 2025-3-28 18:49:31
Quantity and Quantification, ‘gold’ and ‘water’ — are first-level predicates; sortal terms — like ‘ring’ and ‘statue’ — are second-level predicates. A natural language with terms of both sorts is to be regarded as a kind of second-order language, with quantifiers appearing at (at least) two levels.staging 发表于 2025-3-29 00:53:37

The Indeterminacy of Mass Predication, hat mass terms satisfy the required hypotheses. I will show this in two ways: (1) there are mass terms which have distinct extensions, yet which have the same fusion, and (2) there are mass terms which have distinct extensions and distinct fusions, yet whose fusions occupy indiscernible regions of spacetime.他日关税重重 发表于 2025-3-30 03:53:48

On the Usefulness of Quantities, made is the same gold as the gold of which Aunt Suzie’s ring was made’. To understand just what we mean here and to understand why such sentences are true or false we need to know what ‘the bronze’ and ‘the gold’ refer to.. Helen Cartwright has suggested . that such expressions refer to ‘quantities’ of gold or bronze.
