The Rate of Living Theory: A Contemporary Interpretation,to the earlier reports by Rubner (1908), who noted that the metabolic energy expended per gram body weight during lifetime in five mammalian species, which differed six fold in longevity, was similar, around 200kcal. He proposed that duration of life depended on the rate of expenditure of this limited amount of biological energy.
