Mechanisms of immune stimulation by bacterial DNA, result from short sequence motifs, termed CpG motifs or immunostimulatory sequences (ISSs), that occur much more commonly in bacterial than mammalian DNA. Since these sequences can activate the innate immune system, bacterial DNA may serve as a “danger signal” to stimulate host defense during infection .
