Fumio HirataModern nursing began with the revolutionary changes introduced by Florence Nightingale in the middle of the nineteenth century. At the time, virtually all nurses were women and all doctors were men. Like women in general, nurses were typically thought of as the helpmates of men — dependent functionaries who aided doctors in their work.
